Fr. Paul Vota, from cult member to priest

Although his parents were excellent practicing Catholics, Paul graduated from a Jesuit High School in 1969 with honors but without any faith. The combination of the weak, if not undermining, religious instruction of the school, along with his own sinful desires in synch with the new spirit of the sixties, left little room for God in his life. He then spent two-and-one-half years at the University of California at Berkeley, studying the Social Sciences, during some of the most tumultuous times of the school’s history. This experience lead him even further away from the Catholic Faith.

Eventually, disenchanted with life itself, he left school and joined up with a friend in Phoenix, Arizona, where he hoped to live and enjoy life by playing music. Yet, as each day went by, he felt more and more empty inside. In his search for something deeper in life, he ended up attending some meetings organized by the followers of Guru Majara Ji, who said that the guru can help people find God, and in 1974 Paul became a member of that cult.

His journey back to the Catholic faith began one hot summer day when he stopped at a fruit stand on Baseline Road in Phoenix. Paul had no idea that this stand was owned and operated by Miles Jesu. Initially Paul argued with these apostles of Christ (members of Miles Jesu), but in the end, after several visits, he was conquered by their genuine love for Jesus Christ and His Church, their commitment to strive for holiness, and their spirit of unity and joy. After joining Miles Jesu, Paul eventually became our first priest ordained by the Holy Father in 1985.
